LHCG hosts “Weekend of Love” volunteers
A Force of Good in Lake Highlands
The humidity was high at the Lake Highlands Community Garden on the afternoon of May 15th.

But it didn’t stop six members of a company called imc² from spending three hours engaged in the backbreaking work of Bermuda grass removal.

Wait.

A bunch of folks from a brand engagement agency - creative types spending a Saturday hoeing, hacking, digging, shoveling and mulching at a community garden?

With offices in Dallas, New York and Philadelphia, aren’t they supposed to be linked to their laptops?

No. They were following the company credo that is their guiding principle: "Be a Force for Good."

The five able bodies who showed up at the LHCG - John Macrini, Scott Clemmons, Jonathan Feinstein, Allison Kukuk, and Koy Eddlemon - called it their "Weekend of Love."

Lake Highlands gardeners called it divine devil grass intervention.

And devil grass there is at the LHCG, desperately needing to be curtailed before summer sets in, according to gardener and LH Today columnist Heather Rinaldi.

"Bermuda grass is very detrimental to vegetable productivity, as it takes nutrients away from those plants to use for its own health and vigorous spread."

"Encroachment affects all gardeners to have to battle it. Thanks to imc² and their great team effort, each gardener will only have routine weeding to stay on top of as the summer progresses."

With the onset of spring, the east end of the LHCG had returned to its roots, literally, with the Bermuda grass taking a fast and firm hold in pathways, as well as creeping into plots.

The gardeners realized that a significant dent needed to be made before the upcoming June 5th Work Day. Thanks to Donation Garden Coordinator Nancy Wilson registering the LHCG with a web-based volunteer recruiting service called VolunteerMatch, a connection was made with with imc².

A lucky connection, considering that VolunteerMatch has more then 66,000 participating organizations.

According to Jonathan Feinstein of imc², "The company has tried to look for ways to engage our own people in volunteer work that's beneficial to them professionally, as well as personally."

"Our 'Weekend of Love' is a compressed, intense process where we bring nonprofit staff on site to produce quality work in a limited time frame. While this looked different in our different offices, the experience inspired our team, built chemistry, and created personal relationships with folks on the nonprofit side."

Prior to arriving in Lake Highlands, the imc² folks started the morning at Peace Garden.

When they arrived at the LHCG, they brought a full cooler of cold drinks and a substantial amount of energy. For over three hours they cleared a roughly 20x30 foot area that was completely overgrown.

By the time they were finished putting the last layer of mulch down, the area looked as it did when the garden was first cleared in the spring of 2008.
