The Symphonic Percussionists of both FMJH and LHJH each took their turns on stage to perform Technology and Mercury Rising, respectively. With eyes closed, it was impossible to tell these players were 7th and 8th graders.
Their performances were focused and flawless.
The same could be said for the 6th graders of the LH Percussion Club, as well as the Merriman Park and Thurgood Marshall elementary students.
When they took their turns on stage, they enthusiastically beat out the fun-titled pieces Southern Fried and Get The Groove.
Then came Guitar Hero!
When "Axl" Lara, a.k.a. Mark Lara, in an unkempt wig, and his equally outlandishly dressed band accosted the stage, the audience was ready for some seriously fun sounds and showmanship.
The group rocked, romped, banged and beat out their renditions of pieces from the likes of Ozzy Ozborne, War, and even Charlie Daniels.
LHHS Percussionists ended the concert with two pieces that were entirely different in genre.
Jupiter was full of life, as the big sounds the players produced went from high to low, and everything in between. The soul satisfying piece completely surrounded the audience.
To close the show, the ensemble performed Sir Duke. This rendition was arranged by Mr. LaBrecque, who took sticks in hand and joined his players on stage.
The perfectly paced medley was a tribute to both Stevie Wonder and Duke Ellington. This reviewer thinks they would have approved.
In his closing remarks, Mr. LaBrecque remarked that he was both proud of his players and pleased with their performances.
He extended thanks to everyone involved in making the Percussion Concussion one of the most popular annual Lake Highlands events.
“There are so many folks who help make this event happen, from Principal Kelly and Band Director Mr. Bradford, to the teachers who give private lessons," said LaBrecque.
"I want to thank Luke Trowbridge and Sara Christenberry for handling sound and lights and to all the LHABC sponsors," he continued.
"Mostly, a great big thanks goes out to the parents, who are always so flexible with our somewhat irregular practice schedules!”
