LH Today Travelogue: Hitting the open road

Fredericksburg, Burnet, Medina, Bandera...

These are all wonderful, small Hill Country towns, each with its own personality to offer up some unusual sights and friendly encounters.

There’s a bookstore in Georgetown that actually has a stone silo built in the middle of it! Our girls didn’t want to leave.

The town of Medina included a stop in at The Core, a non-profit coffee house operated by volunteers as a place for friends and family, young and old, to meet, rest, play, study, work, or just kick back.

Good lattes, too - made by a couple of ‘tweens!

Peaches were procured in Fredericksburg, and the Western Bling store in Bandera was good for an hour's worth of time off the road.

Our last adventure was the brainchild of the mothers - the Hillsboro Outlet Mall.

Knowing that the first day of school was on the horizon, we decided to take the money we saved by NOT going to SeaWorld and using it for new school clothes.

There were no complaints from the girls.

Our best road trip tip: Pack two coolers, easy to fit between or behind seats for accessibility.

One cooler should hold bottled water, tea, and sodas. The other, a variety of sandwiches in labeled ziplocs, catering to everyone's tastes.

Also pack a tote with snacks and fruit in individual ziplocs, again within easy reach, and a roll of paper towels.

It was easy to replace cooler ice at the hotels, and since each hotel had a fridge, it saved a lot of money that would have otherwise been spent on fast food.
