Exchange Club hosts charity auction & casino night
The evening started with cocktails and dinner was served on the outside patio accompanied by just-right temperatures and a pretty Texas sunset.
The gaming included Texas Hold'em and blackjack tournaments, slot machines, roulette, craps and more. You could have mistaken the gaming room for a busy casino with all the happy noise and activity! The three hours of gaming went by in a flash and everyone cashed their chips for raffle tickets.
The excitement moved to the raffle boxes as the crowd dropped in their tickets to win one of the 26 casino raffle items. The packages included a weekend getaway at the Monmouth Plantation in Mississippi, a reserve bottle of wine from Lone Star Cellars/Triple R Ranch and Winery and various area sporting events. The most popular item was the ski trip for ten to Crested Butte, Colorado donated by Rick and Ingrid Kopf. The lucky winners were Jeff and Michelle Andersen.
The live auction took place before the raffle tickets were drawn. Former Exchange Club President and “voice of Lake Highlands” Bob Johnston did a spectacular job as auctioneer, as always. The most coveted item in the live auction was the weeklong stay in Sayulita, Mexico in private villas overlooking the Pacific. The trip was donated by William and Nancy Gorman and went for $4,000!
Hard work from the planning committee, headed by Jack Norman, paid off as almost $15,000 was raised from the live auction alone. The overall money raised is being tallied by the Exchange Club. All proceeds from the evening go back to Lake Highlands, most in the form of college scholarships to LHHS seniors and community projects.
LH Exchange Club President Stan Scates was pleased with the new venue and turnout of about 500 partygoers. “This is our 19th year to host the event and even with the economy being down we still got a wonderful community turnout and raised a great deal of money for Lake Highlands,” he said.
