Fitness for the whole family comes to LH
The Schmiedekes & the Barnetts in their new gym
On Tuesday, we introduced readers to the Causeys and their new business, the LH Media Center.

In an effort offer continuing coverage to our local business owners, while also giving our readers the chance to learn more about them, today we're focusing on another new start-up.

On October 2nd, yet another new business opened its doors to the Lake Highlands community.

CrossFit Lake Highlands is a fun, family oriented fitness facility owned and operated by LH residents Kristen and Mark Barnett, together with Lisa and Chris Schmiedeke.

Their program is unique in that it features an effective, personalized and community-based fitness lifestyle.

Their specialty? Not specializing!

According to Mark, the program they deliver is not only diverse but also able to cater to all walks of life.

"This is the type of gym that can utilized by military personnel, first responders, firefighters, or the police."

"But it’s equally suited for stay-at-home moms," adds his wife, Kristen.

How can that be?

Kristen explains the benefits the concept affords those stay-at-home moms – or anyone with a busy schedule.

"I have a full plate," she says. "And doing more in less time makes a really big difference. Our workout regimes are unique because people of all fitness levels can achieve better results in less time."

Chris Schmiedeke details what to expect when beginning CrossFit training.

"The first step in the program is the Foundations Class.  It’s designed to go over the basic movements used in CrossFit and prepare the participant for the workouts."

"It's at this point that we, the trainers, learn about our clients both physically and personally, and what their goals are."

"Once they've completed the Foundations Class, and we feel they’ve mastered the basic movements, they can proceed to work out with the regular class."

Because programs are tailored to each individual at their personal fitness level, participants don’t overextend and injure themselves, an important consideration for those wanting to reach their full potential within their limitations.

CrossFit training combines cardio, functional movements, and weight exercises to focus on core strength, lean muscles, and increased stamina.

"While everyone does the same exercises - they are constants - we assess each athlete and change, or ‘scale’ the components of the workout," says Mark.

"These ‘levers’ can range anywhere from the repetitions, the weight, the amount of time, or the distance."

"We’re able to do this because we talk to our athletes, keep track of their progress with workout journals, and use our combined CrossFit experience."

Additionally, smaller classes assure personalized attention and motivation, a key benefit when you consider that the Schmeidekes and their two girls have lived in LH for 10 years, the Barnetts and their children since 2006.
