Churchill Estates - Lake Highlands
Introducing Anne Buckley, new movie columnist
Anne Buckley, new LHT guest columnist
With a background in teaching, writing and public relations, Anne Buckley has a distinguished and varied resume.

A resident of University Park for 27 years, Anne made the move to Lake Highlands in 1997 in what she describes as "a clean getaway."

It was following her tenure as a teacher that she began working for a small newspaper in downtown Dallas.

That led to a job with the Dallas Times Herald, where Anne was a Sunday columnist and real estate feature writer.

She eventually opened her own public relations company, writing business communications for many organizations and industries.

Lucky for us, she also really likes movies!

"As a youngster I discovered that movies on Saturday afternoons could take you to another universe," says Anne.

"The highlight of my week continues to be attending a film."

"I always look for a well told tale, for actors who can slip into a role and disappear into their character, and for interesting cinematography."

Anne is also a fan of independent films.

"Independent film makers have carved out a niche that was missing in standards genres. Their work is essential to view," she says.

She's got an eye for the winners, too.

Anne picked last year's The Hurt Locker early on for an Oscar.

"I also felt Invictus made a special contribution regarding many South African issues and accomplishments."

According to daughter Betty, who has a broadcast film degree from SMU and is a former producer of the PBS series Wishbone, her mother also favors British imports.

"She's a complete sucker for any film coming out of the British Isles and a huge devotee of Clive Owen."

But first up for LH Today readers will be Anne's review of the highly anticipated Waiting for Superman, an independent film that explores the current state of public education in our country.

You may have seen the recent press coverage of this Participant Media film on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

As a former teacher, it's a topic that hits close to home for Anne.

"The film should be revealing," she says. "I hope it will offer some solutions and not just hammer on the problems."

We'll find out next week when Anne offers us her review.

(There might just be some free tickets available for our Facebook fans.)

So be sure to watch for "The Reel Deal: Movies with Anne" – coming soon to the homepage!

Congratulations to Lake Highland movie-goers! Mz Buckley has been my movie buddy and go-to film guru for years. In addition to her fun, intelligent and sometimes quirky insight, she always has an expanse of historical perspective to add to every experience. With Anne Buckley's reviews, you're in for a good time.
