Home burglaries in Lake Highlands
Upon returning to her house in the 10000 block of Linkwood Drive that afternoon, she found her master bedroom had been burglarized.
"I was literally just down the street for a couple of quick errands," Norcross said.
"When I got home, I discovered quite a bit of jewelry all over the floor."
"Then I noticed that my television was gone and began looking around for other missing things," she said. "I called my husband and then the police."
Upon arriving at the house, Norcross said she noticed a bright red shiny pick-up truck pulling out of the alley. Her first thought was that it looked suspicious, since a neighbor reported seeing the truck earlier in the day.
"I think this person saw me leaving the house and took his opportunity," Norcross said. "He was obviously in and out very quickly. It is very unsettling."
"I consider myself lucky that I wasn't home in another part of the house."
It seems the thief parked behind the Norcross residence in the alley, jumped the fence, and pried open the back entrance to the master bedroom. The Dallas police arrived ten minutes after the call.
"The police officers came and took a report and told me the crime unit would come later to dust for fingerprints," Norcross said. "One officer told me there has been a rash of flat screen burglaries in the neighborhood."
Among the jewelry stolen was a family heirloom gold locket.
"There are some pieces that can be identified," Norcross said. "They could be taken to a pawn shop, but I really don't hold out much hope."
Norcross also reported that an elderly neighbor had her doorbell rung late the same evening.
"I told her she should have told the person at the door that she was home, but refuse to open her door." This recommendation comes at the advice of the DPD, who recommend homeowners let potential thieves who are knocking know they are home while calling 911.
Additionally, another home just down the street from the Norcross residence showed evidence of break-in the same day.
"Their bedroom window was broken around the same time, but fortunately that was the only damage," reported Norcross.
The DPD advises neighbors remain vigilant, in addition to keeping garage doors closed and valuables out of sight.
Since thieves are targeting homes with flat screen televisions, closing blinds or curtains is one step that may help prevent a burglary and keep your home protected.
