Come support this amazing local group!
When her daughter Michelle was killed in a car accident in 2002, Parma’s entire world was upended.
Michelle and her cousin Mandie both lost their lives in that accident, and the family was literally shaken to its core.
“The grieving process was long and painful,” says her mother. “But I always wanted to do something to honor Michelle’s legacy.”
Two years ago Parma realized her goal when she formed the local non-profit, Dance to Live!, in memory of her daughter.
Dance to Live! offers grants to non-profit organizations that enable them to provide dance therapy to children in fragile circumstances.
Parma shares the story of one young boy, who was undergoing therapy for serious burns.
“He came to a yoga movement class as part of his therapy,” explains Parma. “At the end of the hour, his mom told us that he moved more in this one class than he had during his entire week in the hospital.”
“Dance therapy is extremely effective in helping these kids transcend the challenges and limitations they face.”
This unique form of therapy offers children the ability to express themselves, serves as an emotional outlet, and touches them regardless of age, background or physical limitation.
Dance to Live! is reaching children at Scottish Rite Hospital, Skyview Elementary, and Ronald McDonald House, just to name a few.
“Michelle began dancing at the age of 5, and by second grade she was performing with the Dallas Ballet in The Nutcracker,” says Parma.
Her journey through life was filled with dance, leading to her success as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, as well.
“Michelle loved to dance and she loved children, so I know she would love that we are serving children in need in her name.”
