Volunteers at Lake Highlands North Park
Dozens of LH residents and a few civic groups came together to pick up trash and tidy up the community’s largest park.
The Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League, Dallas Parks Department and District 10 Councilmember Jerry Allen hosted the 1st annual "For the Love of Lake Highlands North Park" event.
Volunteers included neighbors, homeowner groups and high school students.
Helpers pitched in to landscape the park's signs and fill dozens of bags with trash.
Park Board Representative, Joan Walne, was thrilled by the community’s response and with the number of groups participating.
"It's a great community effort and it’s wonderful to see so many people who care about the park come together, roll up their sleeves and help out," she said.
One such helper was Lake Highlands resident and LHJWL member Meredith Mosley. She brought her daughter and both spent the morning gathering trash and having fun.
"It's great to be here helping to clean up the park we use all the time," Mosley said.
Walne estimates 150 to 200 people came to help.
She hopes for more next year as the event becomes a regular stop for LH residents and students looking for ways to serve the community.
Walne and Allen were both impressed by the large number of young people who volunteered.
"We have a lot of tradition in Lake Highlands. When the young kids come to help, they carry on that tradition."
"That's what Lake Highlands is all about," Allen said.
After the cleanup, all the volunteers were treated to hot dogs and sausages provided by Herb's Paint and Body.
