Atomic Pie offers pizza and more
And so far, things are looking good.
The southeast corner of Walnut Hill and Audelia is the new home to Atomic Pie, a small storefront pizzeria that's just one door down from CrossFit Lake Highlands and across the parking lot from Offshore's Nextdoor.
Two things first catch your eye – the red sports car out front and the matching red chairs and tables, offering sidewalk seating.
Once inside, customers will find a small, attractive dining area and a lot of welcoming faces.
One of the first to greet me was co-owner Tim Cole.
"It's been a week this Thursday that we've been open," Tim told me, when I stopped in to pick up two large pizzas over the weekend.
"When we opened the doors, we weren't quite sure what to expect. But that first day we actually had people waiting at the door."
According to Tim's business partner, Chris Schwab, it's the neighborhood moms who are helping get the word out.
"We had one mom come in last week who sat down to eat and was literally calling and texting her friends from the table."
"She was telling them to get over here and try us out."
Nothing like a little viral marketing from the locals to help spread the word.
"We picked this location for that very reason," said Tim.
"We took a look at the neighborhoods that surround the shopping center and knew it would be a great place to be."
For Lake Highlands, a community that struggles to keep and sometimes support its small businesses, Atomic Pie is a welcome sight on the border of Lake Ridge Estates, just north of Broken Bow.
"We're optimistic about the location," added Chris, "and we're grateful for everyone helping us get the word out."
I can certainly speak for the pizzas. My Saturday visit marked the second time my family has ordered pies from the menu.
They're more than good, and not too greasy, which is important to the two pickiest members of our household, our second grade son and third grade daughter.
With family in town, it was an easy, affordable way to feed everyone, and if it passes muster with my youngest food critics, you can bet we'll be back for more.
Also on the menu are the house sliders, which Tim recommends for adults and kids alike, and some old fashioned Italian salads that are selling really well.
Look for more choices as customers offer feedback about what they like and want to see in the future.
"We're ready to roll out more menu items," Tim told me. "And we want people to let us know what they enjoy most."
On my next trip, I'll be opting for the wedge salad and maybe some New York style cheesecake for the family.
You should definitely make plans to head over, too, and be sure to tell them LH Today sent you.
