Lake Highlands working hard to stay green
This is the second year LHE has partnered with City of Dallas Sanitation Services and a dozen other vendors for what is fast becoming a popular neighborhood event.
This year's event once again offered citizens the opportunity to responsibly dispose of potential landfill fodder, with particular emphasis on electronic waste.
The circular drive off Lynngrove served as the staging area for the collection of a myriad of recyclables.
Visitors simply drove through the circle, where volunteers were on hand to help unload everything from vacuum cleaners to computer monitors, light bulbs, cell phones, building materials, tires, glass, batteries, small appliances, lumber, piping, and much, much more.
Since so much paper was collected in the shred pod that was on site last year, this year the school was one of only two locations that had a shred truck. Much bigger and personally manned, the truck was capable of holding much more paper for secure disposal.
Cindy Engel, LHE PTA Environmental Chair, again headed up the event and was very pleased with the turnout.
“LHE hosted the most visitors during last years Recycle Round Up," says Engel.
"While I haven’t yet received the total tonnage from this year's six hours worth of collection, last year we collected 36,364 pounds of recyclables – setting a city-wide record!
"I’ve been told that this year we had 447 cars come through our LHE back lot, which was twice the number of the next best location.”
Along with students directing folks to the numerous collection stations, visitors also had the opportunity to adopt a loving pet from Operation Kindness and grab a delicious grilled hot dog lunch with proceeds going toward the school's 5th Grade Sky Ranch trip.
Volunteers also collected gently used clothing, books and household items for Goodwill and the RISD Clothes Closet.
According to Engel, the City of Dallas was so impressed with LHE’s efforts during this second event that they’re throwing a party for the many volunteers who made the day's collection so successful.
All signs point to another record-setting event for Lake Highlands!
