RISD Superintentent Simmons resigns his post
Change ahead for Richardson ISD
In what is being described by the RISD Office of Communications as a matter between the RISD School Board and Dr. David Simmons, official statements were released late yesterday afternoon regarding the recent resignation of Dr. Simmons as RISD Superintendent.

Immediately following the RISD School Board meeting, held on Monday, August 3rd, Dr. Simmons tendered his resignation and offered the following comments:

"It is with mixed emotions that I announce my resignation as superintendent of the Richardson Independent School District, effective immediately."

"The decision is based on numerous discussions with the RISD school board," he continues, "and the desire of the board to move in a different direction."

In his prepared statement, Dr. Simmons describes his pride regarding the accomplishments of the district during his service as Superintendent.

"Academically, Richardson is one of the highest rated and performing school districts in the state," says Simmons.

"Credit goes to the teachers, principals, administrators and support personnel who work so hard to put our children first."

Simmons' statement also addresses the fiscal management of RISD by adding, "Despite the tough economic times, the Richardson school district has remained financially strong."

"Taxpayers, business and community leaders should be proud of the strong fiscal management of the district."

Simmons concludes by offering a concise recommendation.

"I appreciate the opportunity to have served as superintendent of the Richardson school district for the past two and one-half years, and I urge everyone to support the next superintendent."

RISD School Board members are remaining relatively quiet regarding the sudden development.

RISD Board President Kim Quirk also released an official statement late Wednesday afternoon.

"The action [of Simmons' resignation] was a mutually agreed upon decision involving philosophical differences," says Quirk.

"The Board desires to build on RISD’s accomplishments under the state accountability system and expand beyond what our legislators say is the measure of achievement."

"RISD has always been on the leading edge, and we intend to stay there," she continues.

"Our students, staff and community deserve this commitment."

As for immediate plans, Quirk says, "The Board will turn its focus immediately to a transitional leadership plan that will include naming an interim superintendent."

"Until that time, day-to-day operations will remain under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent, Patti Kieker."

LH Today will continue to monitor the situation and report developments as they occur.
