Lake Highlands cover band, The Lupners
By 8:00 p.m. Saturday night, just before the first set began, it was standing-room-only on the patio of the popular Tex-Mex restaurant.
Stuart Sides, lead vocalist for the band, and his four cohorts are familiar with pleasing a crowd.
They're regulars at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, where they've been performing together during worship services for quite some time.
"You'll find us on stage just about every weekend during the contemporary services at LHUMC," says Sides.
"After a pretty successful run of enjoying playing together on Sundays, we decided we ought to get together and make a go of it during the rest of the week, as well."
Bill Maselunas, on bass guitar, concurs. "We have a good time together," he says. "We've been at it for about two years. So far, so good."
The crowd on Saturday might describe it as a little better than good.
Just into the second set of the evening, Sides asked the audience, "Who wants to dance?"
He quickly received an answer, as seven ladies filled the dance floor - all 6 feet of it - and proceeded to rock the patio to the band's cover of Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl."
Over the course of the evening, The Lupners covered '80's hits including songs from U2, Tom Petty, The Smiths and Kiss.
A definite crowd favorite in the second set was "Seven Bridges Road," the Steve Young song made so popular by The Eagles in 1980.
Among the crowd, couple Libby and Patrick Dunn were obviously enjoying the performance.
"We received an invitation to the show from a friend on Facebook," says Libby.
"With the kids at grandma's for a visit, we were excited to come see the band and enjoy a Saturday night out."
Based on the packed house, they certainly weren't the only ones enjoying the show.
The Lupners perform at Enchilada's again on September 12th. For more information on the band visit http://www.thelupners.com.
