Desk Accessories:
Key items should be within easy reach.
These items will depend on your student’s age, but some supplies are universal such as pencils, pens, erasers, paper, post it notes, paperclips, etc.
An organizer or two will be needed to store the desk components, and don’t forget a lamp.
Talk with your child and evaluate what he/she will need. Be sure to let them help you!
Emphasize the importance of putting things in their place. Model this habit for them!
Examine paperwork sent home the first few weeks from school and use class and assignment descriptions to get you started in purchasing new items.
Should crayons be bought or a compass? Again, much of this is age and class related.
As new assignments come home and you and your child become familiar with the class requirements, you will probably need to occasionally restock (poster board, white-out, red pens, rulers, colored pencils, note cards, specific reference materials, a calculator, protractor, etc.)
Attention to assignment details means there are no obstacles keeping assignments from being turned in on time.
Purchasing ahead helps to keep your student relaxed.
Atmosphere:
As a former teacher, I personally think music goes a long way in creating a study-friendly atmosphere.
In most cases (but not all) music has been proven to help kids concentrate, aides in drowning out distracting noises and can set the mood (upbeat, relaxed, etc.) for the challenges that lie ahead.
Choice of music is obviously a personal preference and gives you another decision to include your child in.
Your objective is to create a comfortable, efficient, familiar, and low-distraction kind of place your student will want to take ownership of.
With this in mind, be respectful of his/her new area.
Your child needs to know, for instance, that when they put their note cards in a certain spot on the desk, those cards will be there when they return.
Treat their space with the same respect you expect.
And, one last bit of advice: The return of school = The return of school zones!
