Romilda Miller, Live Well Award Honoree
Staff at the senior living community busied themselves hosting an open house, mingling with residents and visitors alike.
But something of a surprise party was also underway.
Unbeknownst to one special resident, Mrs. Romilda Miller, the day's events actually had a lot to do with her.
In December 2009, Miller made the move to Churchill Estates to be closer to her adult children, both of whom live in Lake Highlands.
The decision was based on the state of her health and overall well being.
"When Mrs. Miller moved into Churchill, she required the use of a walker and oxygen," says Tammie Moore, Executive Director for Churchill.
To meet Miller today, one would never know it.
In fact, Saturday's open house was the vehicle for presenting Miller with the first ever "Live Well Award," a distinction created to honor seniors who have achieved remarkable wellness improvement.
A vibrant, affable woman in her seventies, Miller personifies what it means to be living well. Quite well, in fact.
The campus and atmosphere at Churchill reflect the active lifestyles of the many folks who choose to make it their home.
"Turning that next page in the chapter of life – that's what I'm doing," says Miller.
Tai Chi helped her improve her balance, and through yoga she made gains in strength and flexibility.
"And it's not only the wellness plan," she adds. "It's really a whole life experience – the nutritious food, the community, the activities."
Wellness Director, Dustin Allen, who worked with Miller to create a personal plan tailored just for her, agrees.
"She's a big success story. As her health improved she became more active in general, enabling her get out and about more."
"Quality of life is what it's all about."
Miller enjoys regular yoga classes and water aerobics and what she calls a "downsized and enhanced lifestyle."
"The support staff at Churchill does so much for me."
She chuckles and adds, "Who wouldn't be motivated to live better with things like great maid service and handsome bartenders?"
When asked about the next wellness award, Allen says it may be awhile before another honoree is in the spotlight.
"Romilda set the bar pretty high."
Churchill Estates at Lake Highlands is located at 8501 Lullwater Drive.
