Hands on fun with Stephanie Martin
Summer has concluded, so we return this month with an opportunity for our readers to meet another local leader charged with steering our Lake Highlands schools to continued success.
Following interviews with Laurie Taylor of Merriman Park and Darwin Spiller of Stults Road, Voscia Walker interviews Stephanie Martin this week, Head of School at Scofield Christian School.
Originally from Wisconsin, Martin has lived in Dallas for 28 years, calling Lake Highlands her home for the last 11.
"I love the community spirit," says Martin. "There is an intense pride that you can feel from the schools to the coffee shops."
"There is a unity that keeps families together and keeps them coming back."
Martin studied Social Sciences and Economics at Wheaton College and is currently working on a Masters Degree in Educational Administration at Texas A&M, Commerce.
She will be married to her husband, Don, for 30 years this October. Together they share two grown daughters.
Martin has been connected with Scofield for over two decades, first as a parent and then as a staff member for 17 years.
Coming up on her fifth year as the Head of School, Martin is excited about the 50th Anniversary celebration currently underway.
"We have planned a year full of community activities which began with our kickoff on September 6th, commemorating the opening day of SCS in 1961."
Having served as both a parent and an administrator, it's easy to conclude there must be strong ties to Scofield for Martin.
"Scofield is an extension of each of our families and is an extended family in Lake Highlands."
"Our families say that Scofield is a hidden gem, and as a Christian school, we have the joy of talking about the Lord throughout our day."
"Building on scripture, we give our students a solid foundation for their future."
"We have academic excellence, a very strong environment, and our students are able to learn with and from one another, which creates a family-like atmosphere and cultivates lifelong friendships."
Martin says she loves a good book, whether it’s classic children’s literature, research based, or an intriguing novel.
She participates in women’s Bible study and enjoys working with children at her home church, also Scofield, where she is a member.
Although she has a passion for teaching and young people, Martin also has a great love for travel.
Her greatest vacation trips are anywhere she can find water.
"I live for beach trips," she says. "My favorite vacation spot is Anna Maria Island, Florida."
Last summer, she checked off an item on her bucket list when she became certified to scuba dive.
Next at the top of the list is learning to sky dive before she kicks whatever bucket there is to kick!
