Hoops in the Highlands
LH Today visits with Brent Birnbaum, NY artist
LHT: You're a '96 LHHS grad and grew up in Lake Highlands. Are you able to make it back very often?

Birnbaum: My mom, dad, grandfather and other extended family are still in Lake Highlands. I grew up near Abrams and Royal Lane, in the Rolling Trails neighborhood.

My family has lived in the same house since I was one year old, and my mom is still there. I used to come back to Dallas at least twice a year, but as as I get older, life seems to get busier. I was able to make it back home last Christmas.

It's still comforting to go home to Lake Highlands.

My mom has kept my room exactly the same, including the black spiral she let me paint on my ceiling in high school.

She also stores a lot of materials for me at the house. I can call and tell her exactly what I need, and she'll find it, pack it up and ship it to me. To say she's been supportive is an understatement.

LHT: Tell us about your current home in New York.

Birnbaum: I live in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with my girlfriend.

We're very settled and living in a great neighborhood. It has a small town feel to it. I can't walk out the front door without seeing someone I know. We're surrounded by good friends and great art.

LHT: What does your typical Saturday look like?

Birnbaum: On a typical Saturay you might find me watching a British soccer match, checking my eBay auctions, or working in the studio.

I love when it's college football season and I can work with the games on.

Saturday nights might consist of visiting an art opening, dinner with friends or relaxing at home with my girlfriend and our cats.

LHT: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Birnbaum: I love New York and can see us living here at least another few years.

I would also like to live back in Europe at some point.

My girlfriend and I have talked about Berlin, which has been a hot spot for art the last several years. So that might be an option.

I do live and breathe art. I'm never bored with it, and I'm constantly thinking about my projects and visiting shows. Anywhere I can do that, I'll be happy.

You can visit Brent's blog HERE to learn more about his current NY show, Never Can Say Goodbye, as well as read a number of reviews. The show runs through this weekend.

Below are pictures of two of his most recent projects.

(L) A close-up of the piece "I have a dream catcher in the rye whiskey"; and (R) the piece entitled $7,386.57.

Made up of 1,781 price tags stuck on wood, when all the price tags are added up, it equals $7,386.57.
