Hanging up a very special hat
Jerry Haynes, better known to many in North Texas as Mr. Peppermint, passed away earlier this week at the age of 84.
Peppermint Place was a special spot where all were welcome.
Along with his trusty band of characters and puppets, Mr. Peppermint made us feel at home.
For those growing up in Lake Highlands in the 1970's and 80's, that's because many also knew him as a neighbor.
Robin Moss Norcorss, who offers insight for our Lake Highlands History Series on a regular basis, remembers Mr. Haynes and his family well.
"Jerry and his wife Doris were long time residents of Lake Highlands," says Norcross.
"Their daughter Carla, LHHS Class of '74, played tennis at Lake Highlands and also at Trinity University."
"Son Gibby, who graduated in 1976, went on to acclaim as a member of the band, The Butthole Surfers."
The band just completed their 2011 west coast tour in Austin this month.
Norcross says as a child she remembers Haynes donning his Mr. Peppermint sport coat for evening walks with his wife.
"He would stroll the neighborhood in the evenings, often with Doris on his arm."
"To the delight of all the children, his pockets were always full of peppermints."
Norcross recalls him serving as a judge for the Lake Highlands Historical Association's "Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon," as well as the very first battle of the Lake Highlands Dad Bands in 2002.
"I remember how thrilled he was to participate and how everyone loved seeing him."
Mr. Haynes officially retired from public life in 1996, following a long career in television and motion pictures.
