Friday night was a successful one all around for LHHS sports teams, as the Lady 'Cats volleyball team won their Area Round match-up against Copperas Cove, while the football team beat the Richardson Eagles in their final district game of the season and punched their ticket to the 2011-'12 UIL state playoffs.
The Lady 'Cats volleyball squad traveled to Hamilton, Texas to take on Copperas Cove in Area Round of the UIL Region II Bracket.
Coming off a thrashing of Naaman Forest in the Bi-district Round last Tuesday, the Lady 'Cats are playing with a lot of confidence and it showed in their performance Friday night.
Led by the Reed sisters, senior Matalee and freshman Morgan, the Lady 'Cats swept Copperas Cove in three straight sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-21).
With 40 sets credited to her during the match, Morgan continues to shine as the DFW area's top setter.
Not to be outdone by her younger sister, Matalee Reed tallied 22 kill shots, 10 digs and a service ace during the match.
Other notable performances included junior Bonnie Vernon who had 13 kills and nine digs. Sophomore McKenzie Fugat logged three kills, three aces and five digs while junior Anna Ogden chipped in seven digs of her own.
With the win, the Lady 'Cats advance to the Regional Quarterfinals for the fifth year in a row. Lake Highlands will face a tough Rowlett team who defeated the Lady 'Cats in three straight sets earlier this season.
While the Lady 'Cats were taking care of business against Copperas Cove, the Wildcat football team was in a dog fight against the Richardson Eagles.
The final playoff spot from District 9-5A was on the line at Eagle-Mustang stadium and with the 21-14 win, the 'Cats punched their ticket to the Region II Bi-District Round of the 2011-'12 state playoffs.
With senior team captain, DeVonte Sunwenghan, sidelined with an injury, the 'Cats put their playoff hopes on the back of senior running back, Jacobi Johnson, who had 25 carries for 159 yards and two TD's on the night.
It was Johnson's four-yard scamper with seven minutes remaining in the game that broke the 14-14 tie and put the 'Cats up for good.
The Wildcats get their playoff run underway this Friday against Rowlett at the Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland.
Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and, as usual, we will be there bringing you all the action LIVE.
Tune in for the LH Today pregame show at 7:10 p.m.
