Belton Tigers take Game 1 from LHHS Wildcats
'Cats junior pitcher Dylan Porter had a gutsy performance against the high-powered bats of the Belton Tigers.

LH Today will broadcast Game 2 of the Regional Quarterfinal series between the Wildcats and the Tigers LIVE from The 'Cats beginning today at 12:45 P.M.!!!

It was a packed house for Game 1 of the Regional Quarterfinal match-up between the 'Cats and the Belton Tigers Thursday night. Fans in attendance certainly got their money's worth.

After trailing by only one run nearly the entire game, the 'Cats bid to take Game 1 of the 3rd round match-up got away from Coach Higgins and his squad in the bottom of the sixth inning.

While the final score was 4-1 in favor of the Tigers, 'Cats junior pitcher Dylan Porter had a gutsy performance, holding the Tiger's powerful hitters to just two runs on three hits through five and a third innings.

Relative to how the Tigers have treated opposing pitchers all season, Porter pitched a great game.

"Porter had nice movement on his curve ball and forced a lot of ground balls for us," Belton Head Coach Eddie Cornblum said after the game.

"He pitched a good game and made it tough for our batters."

With the Tigers averaging over seven runs per game this season, the 'Cats should come away from the loss with plenty of confidence heading into Game 2.

After all, Belton has plowed through the first two rounds of the playoffs by sweeping both DeSoto and Berkner, registering three shutouts in four games and run-ruling Berkner in Game 2 of their Area round series.

While Belton's ace, Dillon Newman, threw a two hitter and struck out 11 in his complete game win, the 'Cats left several runners on base and made uncharacteristic errors in the field, which allowed the Tigers to score two of their four runs in the game.

'Cats Head Coach, Jay Higgins, was impressed with Newman, but stopped short of giving Belton's ace complete credit for the win.

"I've seen a lot of good pitchers over the years, and Newman mixed his pitches really well," Higgins said. "We've got to hit the ball when it counts, and we didn't do that tonight. We lacked consistency."

The 'Cats return to the friendly confines of The 'Cat at LHHS for Game 2, and hopefully Game 3, against Belton on Saturday.

In order to advance in the 2010 state playoffs, the 'Cats will need to do something no team has been able to do all season - beat Belton twice.

For all you fans who tried to tune into our broadcast of the game, we do apologize for the technical challenges we were experiencing.

Unfortunately, after checking with the wireless data companies and being told we would have a strong signal at Belton High School, there is actually very little coverage in the area. If you'd like to listen to a recording of the game, we've uploaded a clean version into the archives. Click HERE to visit our broadcast page.

Game 2 of the Regional Quarterfinal series against Belton is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

If all goes as planned for Coach Higgins and company, first pitch for Game 3 will be 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.

We'll have a link up for the live broadcast prior to the game.
