After four straight losses to the 'Cats in as many years, Berkner entered Friday night's contest with a huge chip on their shoulder.
Carrying that chip, along with the entire Ram offense on his shoulders, was junior quarterback, Yedidiah Louis, who led Berkner to a win over Lake Highlands for the first time since 2007.
While Louis was only 5 for 10 passing, he rushed the ball 33 times for 185 yards and ended up scoring both of Berkner's touchdowns.
More damaging than the two touchdowns, however, was the fact that Louis and the Ram offense held onto the ball for what seemed an eternity in the first half.
While they didn't put many points on the board, the Rams were highly efficient in devouring precious minutes from the clock and kept the 'Cats offense off the field.
The game of keep away worked well for Berkner in the first half due to the fact the 'Cats offensive was struggling to gain momentum.
While running only 22 first half plays, each of the 'Cats four possession ended with a Mitchel Henton punt.
Berkner's opening possession in the second half was another slow moving train that appeared to be destined for the end zone before the 'Cats defense stood tall, forcing an incomplete pass on a 4th and goal play.
After a quick three and out by the 'Cats, Berkner's offense took the field and used a 56-yard flee flicker to get into scoring position. Louis capped off the three play drive with his second touchdown of the game.
Down 13-0, the 'Cats turned to a little trickery themselves on their next possession.
On a third and seven play from LH's 47-yard line, DeVonte Sunwenghan connected with fellow senior, Michael Wright, for a 53-yard touchdown on a half-back pass. With a missed extra-point, the 'Cats found themselves down 13-6 late in the third quarter.
On their next possession, Berkner once again devoured minutes with a 13 play drive, culminating in a 33-yard field goal that put the Rams up 16-6.
Lake Highlands responded quickly with a four play, 68-yard drive which ended with Sunwenghan scoring a rushing TD from four yards out.
This time Henton hit the extra point and the score was 16-13 with four minutes remaining.
Things got real interesting on the ensuing kick-off as Henton's kick was mishandled by Berkner's return man who nearly turned into the goat of the game as the Lake Highlands coverage team pounced on the ball on the nine yard line.
Unfortunately, after an untimely unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the 'Cats offense was pushed back to the 23-yard line to start their last possession of the game.
After just five plays, Lake Highlands had a first and goal from the one-yard line but just couldn't punch it in.
Berkner's defensive line stuffed Sunwenghan on a 4th and goal play from the one foot line, dashing the Wildcats' hopes of a come from behind win.
Now at 4-3 overall and 3-1 in district play, the 'Cats find themselves in a tie for second place in District 9-5A standings with Jesuit, who comes to the Boneyard Friday night looking for redemption after the 'Cats took last year's contest 29-20.
We'll be there covering the game LIVE on LH Today with our pregame show starting at 7:10 p.m. and kick-off set for 7:30 p.m.
