After a stressful week of final exams, the Wildcat sports teams bounced back into action over the long holiday weekend.
All the action kicked off Thursday night with both Wildcat soccer teams competing in the first round of the Ice Bowl tournament at the Boneyard.
Competing against Allen, Flower Mound Marcus, Garland and South Grand Prairie, the girls won the Ice Bowl title with an overall record of 3-1.
“There were a lot of positives that came out of this weekend,” says Head Coach Misty Benson.
“After a draining week of semester exams and 3 games under our belts, the girls game out with their best and most united effort.”
The girls had four all-tournament selections; freshman Kelsey Munoz, sophomore Glory Williams and seniors Michal Ann Starr and Gina Gossett. Gossett also took home the MVP of the tournament.
Coach Benson commented on the girls performances. “Erin had consistent success in each game while being moved between two different positions, while Michal Ann showed her consistency and composure throughout the entire tournament.”
“Glory Williams backed up why she was voted the team’s MVP and District Newcomer of the Year in 2009 with outstanding play, including a 75-yard run down the field with the ball, beating 7 or 8 players including the keeper, to put a shot on goal that disappointingly pinged off the far post.”
Benson also commented on the composure and consistent play of several other Lady ‘Cats including freshman Kelsey Munoz, junior Avery Voigt and senior Ali Vann.
“All the girls showed what they would give when asked of them. I’m very proud of the efforts by this team, whether they were able to get on the field or cheering from the bench. It was a weekend we won’t soon forget and the beginning of a long road ahead.”
The Lady ‘Cats soccer team faces Plano in their next match on Tuesday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Clark Stadium in Plano.
On the boys side, the Ice Bowl tournament field included Colleyville Heritage, Flower Mound Marcus as well as Rockwall, whom the ‘Cats beat soundly in their first round game, 2-0.
The boys finished with a record of 3-1 in the tournament, good for third place.
The ‘Cats started out with a 2-1 win over Rockwall on Thursday night. Swedish exchange student, Jonathan Esslin, had a big game, scoring a goal and also getting an assist by perfectly placing a corner kick for senior Luke Stinger to score on an impressive header from 10 yards out.
Esselin also scored Friday night on a penalty kick against FM Marcus, who has one of the best teams in the country this year. The ‘Cats lost to FM Marcus, 2-1.
Play continued on Saturday and in their third game of the tournament the 'Cats defeated Colleyville Heritage 1-0 on a goal by junior Emmet Kumeh.
The win enabled the team to advance and play Lewisville in the third place consolation match.
