It was Senior Night as the Lady 'Cats basketball team closed out district play, and they did it in style with a big win over the Lady 'Horns of W.T. White.
The win was a nice way to finish a very tough season for the Lady 'Cats who began their season at 1-14. Making the playoffs is a huge accomplishment, all things considered.
"Frankly, with all the adversity we faced, and with the way the season got started, we thought this would be a rebuilding year," said Head Coach Holly Mulligan. "We really thought we had no shot at the playoffs, and I'm extremely proud of the girls for the way they overcame the adversity and kept fighting hard through it all."
Seniors Kosi Ekwo, D.J. Sandidge and Sam Couch were honored in a pre-game ceremony. Each of the girls was escorted to center court while Coach Mulligan rattled their numerous accomplishments, which were many. Cleary, these senior ladies represent LHHS well.
Once the game got started, a big surprise was in store for the crowd as senior Sam Couch was allowed to dress out and step on the court.
As we reported two weeks ago (read that story here), Sam has had a rough senior year and just wanted a chance to step on the court for her last game as a senior.
"With everything that has happened to her, I felt like she deserved to wear the Wildcat jersey and step on the court one more time," said Coach Mulligan. "I told her to stay back and not play defense and to take one shot and that would be it."
The last shot of Sam's high school career was a long three-pointer from just off the top of the key. Of course, Sam drilled it. "It's fitting she was 100% from the field in her last game as a Wildcat," chuckled Mulligan.
The game itself wasn't much of a contest after the first quarter.
The team was a little nervous without junior Tierra Scott, who was out sick. However, fellow junior Hannah Wedding stepped up in her absence and had 11 first half points. Wedding ended up contributing 17 points to the Lady 'Cats win.
While it was senior night, junior captain Bridget O'Brien stole some of the show with a game-high 19 points. The Lady 'Cats ran away with the game, winning big 63-37.
Coach Mulligan's squad finished up the regular season with an 8-6 record in District 9-5A, good for fourth place.
First round playoff action is set for next Monday, February 15th. Garland Naaman Forrest, who finished on top of the standings in District 10-5A, will be the Lady 'Cats opponent. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm at the Ellis Davis Field House.
Congrats to Coach Mulligan and the Lady Wildcat basketball team and good luck in the playoffs!
