After raising yet another District 9-5A championship trophy last week, the Lake Highlands volleyball team kicked off their 2011 playoff run with a Bi-District win over Naaman Forest on Tuesday night.
While the Lady 'Cats pulled out a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) each set was fairly competitive in the early going, with both teams struggling to hold serve longer than a couple points.
Tied 8-8 in the first set, and with senior Megan Garcia serving, Lake Highlands rattled off six winners in a row before the Rangers were able to stop the bleeding.
The first set ended abruptly on a kill shot by junior Bonnie Vernon who had five kills, an ace and 12 digs in the match. Garcia registered four aces in the match.
The second set was also competitive and stayed close through a 12-12 tie.
However, freshman setter Morgan Reed (5 kills and 18 assists in the match) put the 'Cats up 13-12 with a beautiful drop shot, and the Rangers never really recovered.
Credit the Rangers for keeping the third set competitive (25-21) but in the end, led by senior middle blocker Matalee Reed who had a game high 8 kills, the Lady 'Cats were able to put away the Rangers for the third year in a row and advance in to the Area Round of the UIL state playoffs.
The Lady 'Cats will face Copperas Cove this Friday night.
Copperas Cove won their Bi-District match by defeating Tyler Lee in three straight sets (25-8,25-18,25-21).
The teams will face off at Hamilton High School (Hamilton, Texas) which is about an hour and a half west of Waco. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
LH Today will have live scoring updates during our football broadcast Friday night from Richardson.
