The Lady ‘Cats ran away with the District 9-5A title with a perfect district record of 13-0, so it’s no surprise they cleaned up all-district honors.
Coach of the Year, MVP, Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Blocker of the Year, Setter of the Year and 5 of the 12 spots on the first team all-district squad went to the Wildcats.
In only her first year as the Wildcat’s head coach, Melissa Christman is pleased with the results.
“I wasn't really expecting this in my first year,” says Christman. “Accolades will come with team success, and we had a great run in district play."
"I’m real happy for all the girls and am honored to be the Coach of the Year for the district. That said, as cool as it is to get the award, I’d give up the Coach of the Year for a state title. That's the goal.”
Caroline Henton took home MVP honors and commented on her award.
“It was a goal of mine, but I certainly wasn't expecting it,” says Henton. “With the way we finished the season, being awarded the MVP makes things feel a little bit better. It sure made my Dad proud!”
On her favorite memory from the season, Henton was quick to point to the Richardson game.
“Our goal was to go undefeated, and Richardson had us down two games, but we fought back to win in five," she says. "It was amazing the way we just clicked right in the middle of the match. I’ll always remember that.”
Junior Emily Hillman was one of three underclassman to win post season awards. She commented on what the post season accolades mean for next year’s squad.
“We always looked to the seniors first, and they set a great example for all of us,” says Hillman. “The awards are great, but the leadership they showed set us up for next year."
"We each learned how to be a leader in our own way because we had such great examples.”
On Coach Christman, Hillman believes in her methods.
“Coach is big on leadership," continues Hillman. "Not just with the seniors, but with the whole team. She really helped each player find their role, which I thought was huge."
"She's consistent and told us exactly what we could expect from her on day one.”
