LHHS wrestling finishes 4th at state tourney

The 2012 Wildcat state qualifiers and coaches: (L to R) Assistant coach, Mike Roach, senior (alternate) Biak Thang, (front) sophmore Thayer Atkins, junior D'Andre Brumfield, senior Nathan Schulman, head coach Pete Grieder and assistant coach Ty Williams (back row, L to R) senior Lee Lueder, senior Henry Offord and senior Ryan Branch.

Junior D'Andre Brumfield brought home a silver medal from the state tournament in the 106 lb. weight class.

Senior Nathan Schulman placed 4th in the 138 lb. weight class.

Sophmore Nathan Schulman placed 4th in the 113 lb. weight class.

The Lake Highlands Wildcats capped off another successful season at the 2012 state wrestling championships in Austin last weekend.

In his 26th year as Wildcat head coach, Pete Grieder coached his boys to an impressive 20th district team championship this year and capped off the season with a fourth place finish at the 2012 state tournament.

Six 'Cats traveled to Austin as full qualifiers with Biak Thang making the trip as an alternate. Of the six full qualifiers, three made the final podium.

Junior D'Andre Brumfield battled Brice Bassinger from Saginaw in the 106 lb. final and lost 11-5.

The loss was only the second of the season for Brumfield who battled back from being upset at the district tournament (where he placed second) to winning Regionals and nearly taking the gold at state.

113 lb. sophomore Thayer Atkins entered the state tournament undefeated looking to improve on his fourth place finish from last year's tournament where he was the first freshman in school history to make the Austin podium.

However, after a third round loss to eventual state champion, Braun Marquez, Atkins dropped the 3rd/4th place match in the finals 3-2 to Mason Stout of Allen.

Senior Nathan Schulman, an alternate at last year's state tournament, also competed in the finals for a shot at a bronze in the 138 lb. weight class but came up short against Devin Vasquez of Eastwood.

Congrats to Nathan on a great high school wrestling career.

Other state qualifiers who didn't place were seniors Ryan Branch, Lee Lueder and Henry Offord. Congrats to all three of these young men on a great season and career.

Coach Grieder says he considers this season a big success.

"Heading into the tournament I thought we should end up in the top five in state, which we did."

"We deserved to be there, and we proved it at the state duals earlier this season, as well as the state tournament."

"Overall the three wrestlers who placed were our three best wrestlers all season."

"They deserved state medals and not getting an individual champion was disappointing, but the competition was a little stiffer than expected. We are still excited to finish out the season on a great note."

"We have ten seniors graduating from this team, but next year we will reload.

"With the return of Brumfield and Atkins, we again will have a stellar team ready to tackle the competition."
