It was a roller coaster ride of a season for the 2010 Lake Highlands Wildcat baseball team.
The season was full of highs and lows – big wins and tough losses – each in their own way helping to define a season that will be remembered for a long time to come.
The Wildcats finished District 9-5A with a 9-5 record and kept fans on the edge of their seat for the last half of the season. They needed to win their last three regular season games just to make the playoffs, and they did it, finishing district play in 4th place.
While a 4th place finish in district play usually doesn’t afford any team the chance at a playoff run, the ‘Cats went on to upset Rowlett in the Bi-District round before advancing and sweeping Killeen Ellison in the Area Round.
It took one of the best teams in the state, the Belton Tigers, to knock the ‘Cats out of the playoffs in the Regional Quarterfinal round.
Fans who followed this season closely know how the ‘Cats fought for everything they earned. Nothing was given to them and, in the end, they left it all on the field.
Coaches around the district thought enough of Coach Higgins and his squad to include seven Wildcat players on the District 9-5A All-District Team.
Those players included:
Pitcher, Judson Luther
Infielders: Byron Burns, Blake Woodson
Outfielder, Cameron Bodell
Most Oustanding Newcomer, Michael Ketchmark
Most Outstanding Defensive player, David Bloodworth
Honorable Mention: Catcher, R.J. Burns
All seven players were included on RISD’s All-City Team, as well.
LH Today caught up with senior team captain Cameron Bodell for his comments on the post season awards.
“The accolades are nice and all, but for me it’s not really about the award. It’s about the team,” said Bodell. “We are being recognized individually because each and every member of the team fought hard together.”
Turns out Bodell isn’t quite done with his high school career just yet. He's been invited to participate in the North Texas High School Baseball All-Star game on June 13th.
“I’m truly honored to have been invited to play in the All-Star game. It’s a great way to end the season, and I’ll be playing for all my teammates, coaches and everyone who has supported me throughout my career.”
Congrats to all the Wildcats on a great season – it was a ton of fun.
See you next year at The 'Cat!
