Wildcat sports teams land district titles

Wildcat sports teams land district titles

The Lake Highlands Wildcats sports teams are on a roll this week.

Led by seniors Sarie Morrison and Hannah Van Meter, the gymnastics team captured the District 9-5A title last night.

Meanwhile, just a couple hours later, the boys soccer team locked-up at least a share of the district title, with their 3-1 win over Creekview. (Check out our Quick Hits section for the full story on last night’s game.)

Prior to start of the gymnastics season, it wasn't clear how things would come together due to the foot injuries sustained by senior team captains, Sarie Morrison and Hannah Van Meter.

Gymnastics Head Coach Addi Ledford commented on the situation last night.

“With both Sarie and Hannah coming off of foot surgery, I wasn't sure if we'd even have a season, so my main goal was simply to get them healthy," said Ledford.

"By January things were moving along, and Hannah really stepped up to the plate. She's had an awesome senior year."

"Sarie's recovery has unfortunately been a bit slower," continued Ledford.

"We've been taking the season one day at a time. Her foot is still bothering her, but she's very determined and a strong young lady who fights to the end."

"We've slowly been building up to the state competition, and we're doing a great job of that so far."

"Last night's meet wasn't perfect, but we still managed to win. For Regions and State, the girls will need to dig deep and find perfection. I know they can do it!"

As far as district championship results go, despite their pre-season surgeries and nagging soreness, Morrison and Van Meter led the team and finished one-two in the all-around.

Morrison captured the bars, beam and vault titles. Along with Morrison, Van Meter took a share of the vault title, as well.

Van Meter and Morrison weren’t the only Lady ‘Cats to bring home hardware from the district meet.

Sophomore Kristen DeCosta, who has been battling injuries of her own, captured an individual title with a solid floor routine.

The Lady 'Cats now move on to Regionals, which is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th & Wednesday, March 31st at Highland Park High School.

Congrats to Coach Ledford and all the Lady ‘Cats gymnasts!

GO ‘CATS!
