Wildcats Football loses key coach to McKinney

Wildcats Football loses key coach to McKinney
Coach Smith coaching up his linebackers during two-a-days, summer 2009.

Wildcats Defensive Coordinator Jeff Smith led the 'Cats 2009 defensive squad to the area's #1 ranking this year, giving up an average of only 215 yards and 16 points per game.

As a reward, McKinney ISD came calling and yesterday made him the next Head Coach for the McKinney football program.

"I'm extremely proud of Jeff, and while I'd love to keep him on our staff here in Lake Highlands, he is more than ready to move up the coaching ladder," said Wildcats Head Coach, Scott Smith, of his defensive cooridnator's departure from the program.

"We are losing more than just a great football coach," continued Smith. "Jeff is a great teacher and friend. McKinney is fortunate to have him, and I wish him nothing but the best."

Junior defensive tackle and team captain, Tre' Stewart commented on what Smith's leadership meant to the development and success of the defensive squad this year.

"Coach Smith has had a huge impact on all of us," Stewart said. "He's very intense, and even though he wasn't on the field playing, he was a big part of our success as a defense."

"Our coaches always say that they aren't taking us for what we are - but for what we can become," continued Stewart.

"Coach Smith enforced that philosphy on a daily basis and drove us to be better. He will be missed."

McKinney ISD's official press release can be viewed by clicking here.

Together with the community, LH Today wishes Coach Smith the best in his new endeavor.
