The Lake Highlands Wildcats (2-2) defeated the Spartans from Dallas Samuell (0-4) Friday night at the Boneyard.
The game was the first District 9-5A contest of the season for the 'Cats who entered the game coming off two consecutive non-district losses.
Lack of consistency on offense has been an issue for the Wildcats so far this season, so the game against the Spartans provided a good opportunity for Lake Highlands to work out some of the kinks.
Led by junior running back, Elbert Landry, who ended the night with two touchdowns and a career high 125 yards rushing, the Wildcats imposed their will on the Spartans with an effective ground attack.
While Landry was the leading rusher for the 'Cats, it was senior running back, Jacobi Johnson, who rushed for the first two Wildcat touchdowns in the game. Johnson ended the game with 63 yards rushing and two TD's.
After struggling to get the offense going in their last game against Garland, junior quarterback, Trent Jones, completed 75% of his passes (9 of 12) for 133 yards and two touchdowns Friday night.
Jones connected with senior team captain, Zach Fleig, for a 22-yard strike in the second quarter – Fleig's first touchdown of his career.
With a 28-6 halftime lead, the 'Cats kept the clock running in the with a good dose of Landry, who tallied both of his rushing touchdowns in the second half.
While the 'Cats offense kept fans entertained, the defense went about their business in workmen-like fashion, forcing two turnovers while holding the Spartans to under 200 yards of total offense, most of which came in the 4th quarter during mop up duty.
We caught up with Head Coach Scott Smith after the game for his comments.
"We did some good things, but we have some areas where we can still get better," he said.
"Communication wise, on the field, we busted a few snaps early in the game."
"Defensively we played pretty well in spots. Their big fullback was a load, and we could have done a better job tackling him."
The Wildcats head to Loos Stadium in Addison this Friday night for a match-up against W.T. White – their team coming off blow-out loss to Jesuit.
Kick-off against the Longhorns is set for 7:30 p.m.
