Game two of the district 9-5A schedule for Lake Highlands (2-2, 1-0) has the Wildcats traveling to Loos Stadium tonight to take on the Longhorns of W.T. White (2-2, 0-1).
It's been a bumpy ride this season, but coming off a big win over Dallas Samuell, the 'Cats look to the Longhorns as an opportunity to begin their first win streak of the season.
While you wouldn't know it by the final score of 49-13, the Wildcats came out a bit flat against Samuell.
Avoiding a slow start against the Longhorns is a focus for the team this week.
"The pace of the Samuell game was a little different than what we were used to against Garland and Mesquite, so our guys did come out a little flat," said Head Coach Scott Smith.
"What was most impressive was the communication we had with the kids, and how they refocused as a group and then came out in the second half and played at our level and executed."
Back-up quarterback, junior Trent Jones, who is expected to start again tonight, hopes to build on what was an effective performance against the Spartans.
After a tough outing in his first start against Garland, Jones bounced back and threw for two touchdowns while completing 9 of 12 passes (75%) last Friday night against Samuell.
"Boy we are really proud of him," Smith said of Jones.
"The ball he threw to Zach Flieg on the vertical route was as good a throw as anyone could make."
"His other TD pass was a nice strike, as well. He's getting more comfortable with what we're doing. He's got to work to do it, but we're really proud of the progress he's made."
Jones agrees with this head coach.
"It's definitely a different pace from practice to the games," said Jones.
"Even though we struggled against Garland, I got more comfortable as the game went on. Things start to feel like practice once you get used to the speed."
On hitting Zach Flieg for his first varsity TD against Samuell, Jones comments, "it was a lot of fun."
"Zach is a great player, great captain and teammate. I look to him on the field as much as possible. He's reliable with great hands."
"We're fortunate to have five great captains on this team, and Zach happens to be the leader of the leaders," Smith said of his team captain.
"He is bar none the hardest worker in practice. He's not flashy or looking for the spotlight. He just does what he does and tries to help us win football games."
Jones, Flieg and the rest of the Wildcat crew are set for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off against W.T. White tonight at Loos Stadium in Addison.
