‘Cats face Mesquite in season opener
Zero Week: Lake Highlands Wildcats vs. the Mesquite Skeeters!

There will be a lot of familiar faces at the wide receiver positions, as well.

Juniors Michael Wright and Devonte Sunwengham, along with seniors Tayrohn Brown, Deondre Glover and Anthony Harris all either started or had significant playing time last season. With several capable back-ups, the wide receiver unit is the deepest on the team.

Another lingering question for Coach Smith’s squad is how the ‘Cats defense will compare to last years, which ranked #1 in the area through ten games last season.

Overall, the team speed on the defensive side of the ball compares favorably to the 2009 unit, which held Mesquite to just 215 total yards on offense in last year's game.

The ‘Cats return four all-district players on defense - all seniors and team captains- defensive end Mitch Marzuola, defensive tackle Tré Stewart, cornerback David Green and linebacker Roderick Mackey.

Like last year, the ‘Cats defense will never overwhelm you with their size, but will rely on sound technique, team speed and relentless pursuit to corral their opponents.

As far as Mesquite is concerned, they're coming into tonight’s game with a huge chip on their shoulder.

The 31-14 loss to the Wildcats in the season opener last year completely derailed the Skeeters who finished their 2009 campaign with a dismal 1-9 record.

Mesquite’s atrocious 2009 season is likely one their coaches and players would like to forget, and a win tonight would go along way in doing just that.

At quarterback for the Skeeters, senior Jake Lanford will likely give the ‘Cats defense plenty to think about tonight.

Lanford only started three late-season games last year, but in those three games he tallied over 700 all-purpose yards and 5 TD's.

In watching Mesquite in their pre-season scrimmage against Plano High School, it was evident that Lanford has a strong arm and will provide a very good test of the ‘Cats defensive backs.

Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Hanby Stadium.

GO ‘CATS!
