Sports Update: Ice Bowl, State Duals & Basketball
Junior guard, David Harris, hits the three from the top of the key

The ‘Cats beat Lewisville 3-1 on goals from senior Luke Stinger, sophomores Murphy Short and Reagan Dunk.

“Overall we played decently but I think our best soccer is still ahead of us,” says Head Coach Hanes Brindley. “We need to do a better job of winning balls in the air and making runs off the ball to beat a team the caliber of FM Marcus, but I think we are capable of doing that.”

The boys next game is at home tomorrow night against Allen. JV starts play at 5:30 p.m., Varsity gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

Both the boys and girls basketball teams continued district 9-5A play against WT White last Friday night.

Coming off a big win over Richardson, the boys enjoyed a home game against the Longhorns and ran away with a 64-39 victory, improving their district record to 3-2.

Junior Trey Bingham led the ‘Cats with 13 points, while seniors Tevin Elmore and Aaron Mazibuko added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Currently, the ‘Cats are in a 3-way tie for third place in District 9-5A, with an overall record of 11-11. With 9 games to play, current standings are:

Berkner 5-0 district, 20-4 overall
Creekview 4-1 district, 16-7 overall
Skyline 3-2 district, 17-6 overall
Ricahrdson 3-2 district, 15-10 overall
Lake Highlands 3-2 district, 11-11 overall
WT Whilte 2-3 district, 5-16 overall
Molina 0-5 district, 4-14 overall
Sunset 0-5 district, 3-18 overall

The girls traveled to WT White on Friday and matched the boys team in their efforts, trouncing the Lady ‘Horns, 48-23.

Junior captain Bridget O’Brien led the Lady ‘Cats with 13 points, while senior Kosi Ekwu added ten points of her own. Junior Hannah Wedding also contributed 8 points to the Lady ‘Cats win.

Not unlike the boys squad, the Lady ‘Cats now find themselves in a three-way tie for 3rd place in district 9-5A play.

Current District 9-5A standings for the girls are:

Skyline 7-0 district, 21-2 overall
Richardson 6-1 district, 16-7 overall
Berkner 4-3 district, 11-3 overall
Creekview 4-3 district, 13-12 overall
Lake Highlands 4-3 district, 5-13 overall
Sunset 2-5 district, 7-15 overall
W.T. White 1-6 district, 6-16 overall
Molina 0-7 district, 0-23 overall

Also this past weekend, the state-ranked LHHS wrestling team traveled to Amarillo on Saturday to compete in the State Dual tournament.

An injury-depleted squad managed to finish a disappointing 11th place with a team dual record of 3-2, beating Arlington Bowie (54-22) and Morton Ranch (40-33) but losing to Klein (30-40), Randall Amarillo (30-45) and Amarillo (30-45).

The ‘Cats were without a couple key contributors - seniors Robby Penny and Isaac Kinsella - both of whom should return to action later this month.

“Overall, we did what we could when you take into account the guys we had missing from the lineup,” says Head Coach Pete Grieder.

“Only 16 teams out of the 250 teams in the state qualify for the state duals, and we were one of the few who got a chance to compete, so that is something to be proud of. We should have everyone back and be ready to roll once district comes around.”

Wildcat wrestlers who went undefeated for the tournament were Seniors Drew Llorett, Isaac Grieder, Brent Bono and sophomore Nathan Schulman.

Isaac Grieder is now an impressive 40-0 on the season and is currently ranked #1 in the state for the 160 lb. weight class.

The ‘Cats face Jesuit Tuesday night in a dual at LHHS. JV action begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by Varsity starting at 7:00 p.m.
