In the first 30 seconds of the 3rd period, Thompson inadvertently kicked Schulman in the mouth while trying to escape Schulman. An injury timeout was needed in order for Schulman to get treatment for his bloody lip.
Schulman returned and quickly scored on a take down, increasing his lead to three points, 9-6. Thompson scored another point on a foul by Schulman, but the point wouldn’t make a difference in the final outcome. Schulman tacked on a few more points to secure the upset win over the state ranked Thompson, 12-7.
Another notable performance of the day came from the state's #1 wrestler in the 160 lb. weight class, Isaac Grieder. Grieder continued his amazing season by easily winning yet another district championship.
As the #1 seed, Grieder was given a bye in the 1st round. His second round opponent, Warez Rashid of Berkner, was no match. It took Grieder 1:42 to get his first pin on the day.
Matt Supan of JJ Pearce was Grieder’s opponent in the finals, but he didn’t last long either. Grieder pinned Supan in 3:12 to repeat as the district champ in the 160 lb. weight class. The two wins pushed Grieder’s overall season record to an amazing 51-0.
