The Eagles infielders were clearly frustrated by the call and seemed to forget a game was going on, which allowed Bloodworth to steal third. Browder then stepped to the plate and brought Bloodworth home with a single.
The most critical defensive play in the game came in the bottom of the 5th inning when the ‘Cats executed a beautiful 1-6-3 double play.
The play began with Burns fielding a comebacker in front of the pitching mound. Burns then turned and connected with Bloodworth at second base for the first out. Bloodworth leaped over the Eagles base runner and fired the ball over to first base, where a fully stretched Judson Luther made the catch and got the call out to end the inning. With the help of great catches by Blake Woodson and Dylan Porter, the ‘Cats made quick work of the Eagles in the final two innings of the game. The final out in the bottom of the 7th brought on a wild celebration by players and fans alike.
Coach Higgins had plenty of compliments of his team’s performance after the game.
“Super job today. I told them after yesterday's loss to go play ball. This team has fight in them so I wasn't worried about them showing up today,” Higgins said.
On the 1-hitter thrown by his starting pitcher, Higgins thought going in that Burns might have a good game as a curve ball pitcher.
“Burns threw a great game for us. They had a tough time with the curve ball in the first two games of the series, so we just needed to play great defense, which we did."
"Burns was clutch on the mound for us today. He did a good job of getting in front on the count and had confidence in his defense.”
With the Game 3 win, the Wildcats are Bi-District champs and advance to the Area round which will be played later this week.
After defeating Mesquite in two games, Killeen Ellison will be the 'Cats opponent in the Area round. Ellison finished District 12-5A play in third place with an 8-6 record in district play and was 18-11-1 overall.
The Area round will likely start on Thursday or Friday, time and location TBD. Best case scenario for the 'Cats would be to play at Killeen on Thursday then return home for Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary.)
Congrats to the Coach Higgins and the rest of the 2010 Wildcat baseball team on their Bi-District Championship!
