It was seemingly all Wildcats after that, as Desmond Roland showed why he is ranked as one of the area’s top college recruits, scoring on touchdown runs of five and 73 yards to close the third quarter with Lake Highlands on top 35-24.
After the game, Roland commented on the outcome. "Before the game, I told everyone on the team we were going to make mistakes, but we had to keep our heads up," Roland said. "That's what we did there at the beginning of the game, and it was on from there. It was ugly, but we got it done."
Sunwenghan, who finished the game with 234 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, continued the fun as he raced 28 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter. He went on to answer an impressive Mesquite scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown plunge to end the Wildcat scoring for the night, securing the win.
Quarterback Trent Jones, who dueled Ketchmark for the starting job this summer, saw action in the second half, leading the Wildcats on a third quarter touchdown drive while gaining valuable playing time.
"Both players deserved to play tonight. Ketchmark got the start but to compete in 5A football, you've got to have two quarterbacks who can run your offense," Smith said after the game.
"After a hard fought competition for the starting job, I'm proud of the way both of the quarterbacks handled the situation and came out here ready to compete tonight."
Lake Highlands must now look ahead to next Friday’s game with Mesquite Horn at Hanby Stadium, as the 'Cats attempt to avenge last year's ugly loss to the Jaguars.
The challenge won’t be easy when considering the possible loss of All-District Linebacker Roderick Mackey to a knee injury Friday night.
If Mackey’s injury is serious, the Wildcats will have to depend on senior Derek Floyd and sophomore Jon Garza to fill the defensive void. Both turned in strong performances against the Skeeters following Mackey’s injury and could play an important role as the season progresses.
The ‘Cats will also have to depend on the team's young quarterbacks, Sunwenghan, a feisty defense and a big dose of Desmond Roland as they prepares for the rest of the 2010 football season.
If you missed all the action, you can listen to our archived broadcast of the game in our LH Today Broadcast Center.
