The Lake Highlands Wildcat baseball team will play their final district game against Molina tomorrow evening. A Friday night win will secure the team the final state playoff spot for District 9-5A.
With the game being the last district game of their season, and for the seniors the last of their high school career, the players on the squad are likely to be a little anxious before the first pitch. However, junior Taylor Stell will probably be wild with excitement.
By most accounts, the game against Rockwall-Heath on March 17th at the Ballpark in Arlington was the last of Stell's junior campaign. Late in the game, Stell was sliding into second base attempting to break up a double play but ended up breaking his foot instead.
The 'Cats dropped the game in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. Stell left the Ballpark in Arlington injured and wondering what the next day's x-rays and MRI would bring, and how much of his high school junior season would be lost, if not all of it.
Prior to breaking his foot, Stell was having a tremendous season for the 'Cats as the starting third baseman and was one of the top hitters in the area for Class 5A baseball.
Entering the Rockwall-Heath game, just 13 games into the season, Stell had a .500 batting average with 3 home runs, 6 doubles, a triple and 21 RBI's. This included two district games in which Stell boasted a .714 batting average. He was a vacuum at third base as well, gobbling up ball after ball hit his way.
As a sophomore, Stell hit .407 for the season and made the District 9-5A All-District team and was named the district's "Sophomore of the Year."
Just this week, the doctor gave Stell the green light to return to the lineup for the 'Cats.
He's looking forward to helping the team secure a playoff berth with a win over Molina tomorrow night and hopefully make a deep playoff run.
The game is being played at Molina with the first pitch set for 5:00 p.m.
Good luck to the Wildcats tomorrow and welcome back, Taylor!
