Beginning her second year as the Lady ‘Cats volleyball head coach, Melissa Crown recently traveled to the Duncanville Tournament of Champions with a team chock-full of underclassmen.
The youthful Wildcat team had a tough draw last week, as they faced the defending 3A state champs from Lovejoy in their first match of the tourney.
Unfortunately for the Lady ‘Cats, Lovejoy appeared to be in mid-season form and ready for a repeat, handily defeating Coach Crown’s squad in two games (17-25, 13-25).
After the loss, Coach Crown looked to the positives from the Lovejoy match.
"We knew going into the match it would be tough, but we gave up 13 points off errors," said Crown. "Our killing efficiency was only 15%. These are things that we control and can improve on. We just need more repetitions."
For Game 2 in the tourney, the Lady 'Cats took on San Angelo. While much more competitive than the Lovejoy match, San Angelo kept the Wildcats winless after taking the match in three games (29-27, 24-26, 25-15).
In the third match of the tournament, the LHHS tallied their first win on the season by beating L.D. Bell in two out of three games (17-25, 25-19, 25-19).
Saturday morning, in their final game of the tournament, the Lady ‘Cats lost in two games to Flower Mound (10-25, 28-30).
Standout players in the tournament for were seniors Emily Hillman and Hollyn Adams, juniors Matalee Reed and Megan Garcia, and sophomore Katie Bott.
The Lady 'Cats are currently 1-5 on the season and are scheduled to play at Hebron this Tuesday, August 17th.
