While there was a district volleyball game to be played on Tuesday night, it was also the scene of the 3rd Annual Pink Out night in honor of the 'Cats for the Cure fundraiser.
For third year in a row, the LHHS gym was awash in pink during the game against Skyline as the Lady 'Cats also worked to raise awareness for cancer.
You might remember the story of Lake Highlands High School student Emily Obenhaus, who three years ago was diagnosed with cancer which galvanized her teammates to begin a cancer awareness campaign – 'Cats for the Cure.
Now a senior at LHHS, Emily was on hand at the pregame ceremony where it was announced that $3,000 had been raised in her honor and would be donated to MD Anderson in Houston.
Heading up this year's 'Cats for the Cure fundraiser was senior Megan Garcia.
We caught up with Garcia and Lady 'Cats Head Coach, Shelly Massey, last week for their thoughts on the fundraiser which you can read here.
And, for the third year in a row, the Christy|Norcross|Thomas Real Estate Group sponsored the fundraiser, and partner Robin Norcross was on hand for the presentation.
"We are so very proud to have partnered with the Lady 'Cats again this year with Cats for the Cure campaign," Norcross said.
"Kudos to Rachael Zreet for getting it going and to Megan Garcia for taking the helm the last two years. Emily's words tonight inspired us all!"
As far as the actual game against Skyline, well, like most of the Lady 'Cats district matches over the past few years, it wasn't much of a contest.
Lake Highlands defeated Skyline in three straight games 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.
In district play this year, Lake Highlands is not only undefeated but has yet to give up a single game to its district opponents.
To put the Lady 'Cats dominance in perspective, here is a little trivia:
Going back to the '07-'08 season, the Lady 'Cats have now won 49 consecutive district matches. In those 49 matches, Lake Highlands has given up only five total games.
It's an amazing streak, regardless of the level of competition.
Next up for the girls is a match against Sunset Friday night at LHHS.
The action is set to get underway at 7:00 p.m.
Next Tuesday October 11th, the Lady 'Cats will travel to Richardson High School to take on the Lady Eagles.
RHS is currently in a first place tie with Lake Highlands in the District 9-5A standings.
That match is also set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
