As District 9-5A champions, the Wildcat boys golf team teed off at the Region II 5A golf tournament in Waco today.
After day one, the 'Cats are currently in 11th place with a combined stroke total of 323. Lufkin is in first at 305.
Senior Randy Appling, who claims the individual District 9-5A crown, shot a 77 on the day. Sophomore Stephen Allen shot an 80, junior Bobby Ladtkow - 82, freshman Kyle Kennedy - 84, and sophomore Taylor Wharton - 84.
Junior David Green, who was tonight voted a senior team captain for the 2010 Wildcat football team, unfortunately didn't hit the ball well today. Green will turn around and head back to Waco again on Monday for the Regional track meet where he'll compete in the 4x200M Relay.
According Head Coach Christopher Cole, it will likely take a two day total of 142 to qualify for state in the golf tournament.
"We played pretty well," said Cole. "Gave away a lot of strokes on the last three holes, though."
"We'll have to go out and give it our best tomorrow in order to have a shot at qualifying for state."
