Calvary Lutheran is heading to the City of Lights
A night in Paris with Calvary Lutheran
Calvary Lutheran School on Church Road is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and has been educating students in Lake Highlands since 1972.

While the usual reading, writing, and arithmetic are part of the curriculum for the approximately 80 kids in the student body, Calvary also employs some real world education for their upperclassmen.

Each year, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students plan a week long trip to one of three locations.

Because these trips encompass the three upper grades, the kids are able to experience three terrific trips prior to graduating from Calvary.

One year the kids head to Washington, D.C. The next year they’re off to Watertown, Wisconsin, home of Martin Luther Prep School. While there, they also hop over to St. Louis, Springfield, and Chicago.

The third trip in the trinity is an international one, and on March 8th, 19 students and 29 adults, mostly parents with some faculty, will be heading to Paris, France.

Jim Henrickson, principal at Calvary aims to ensure the international situation is stable and the costs are reasonable for the educational trips.

"We’re blessed with individuals who have a love for history, art and architecture, and in the past we have traveled to London, Rome, Florence, and Paris. The majority of the planning is done by myself, Joanne Nemmers, my very gifted secretary, and our 5th/6th grade art teacher who has had tremendous travel experience."

"We also try to travel during the off-season. This is how we can keep the costs relatively low."

While in Paris, the group will stay just north of Notre Dame Cathedral and will also travel to Normandy, Reims, and Versailles.

Along with Notre Dame, some of the historic sites the group will visit include Sainte-Chapelle Cathedral, the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, Place de la Concorde, Arc de Triomphe, Trocadero, the Eiffel Tower, the Musée d’Orsay, and Omaha Beach. The group is set to return on March 14th.

To help cover costs, Calvary organizes of number of fundraisers every year that include garage sales, Thanksgiving pies, Christmas catalog sales, car washes and a basketball tournament.

Each year a special dinner is also hosted, and it's influenced by the group's chosen location. So this year's event was aptly named "A Night in Paris."

The fundraising dinner was a gastronomic feast. Some of the haute cuisine that guests enjoyed included Rosemary Brie en Crouté, dough encased olives, and assorted crudités.

The main menu consisted of French Onion Soup and Butternut Squash Bisque, Beef Bourguignon, French Cassoulét with rice pilaf, and of course, the classic Créme Brulee for dessert.

"Another blessing is our excellent cook who prepared the menu," said Henrickson. "Volunteers organized the entertainment, our students were dressed as waiters and served the guests, and we even provided babysitting services."

On February 20th, Calvary Lutheran School hosted its Open House and accepted applications for students interested in their fully accredited academic programs.

Beginning later this year, Calvary will also host a new Pre-K program.
