Children enjoy outdoor learning in the garden
This new garden will serve as a living classroom and outdoor laboratory where Scofield students can apply lessons from academic subjects such as natural sciences, mathematics, and fine arts.
The first phase of the gardens includes three beds with coordinating paths, while the second phase includes completion of a study area with tables.
Scofield also has plans to expand their outdoor learning program to include composting, additional plants and other nature studies in the near future.
"Last spring, a few of our teachers and administrators began to develop a vision for an expanded, outdoor learning center," explains Wanda Campbell, Scofield's Director of Marketing.
"Their shared goal was to give students an opportunity for hands-on learning in an outdoor space, much like the community gardens expanding across our nation in urban areas."
First grade teacher Jan Jackson, along with Amy Smith, Vice President of Scofield's Parent Teacher Board, worked together to develop a specific plan for a garden of colonial design.
This design coordinates with the architectural style of Scofield's buildings, while creating a foundation for the school's areas of study.
"The garden will have designated regions to support units of study including science and history," says Campbell.
"For example, in our design, students studying Colonial America have a space to grow and dry herbs and use them in cooking."
The garden will be utilized and enjoyed by all Scofield students, whose classes range from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade.
"Each grade has a specific section in the garden to reflect their curricula study," explains Campbell. "Planting the garden will be a joint effort between students, teachers and parents."
"We have been blessed to receive volunteer help from our parents, as well as financial support for the first phase of our project."
The school will be hosting an Open House January 13, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Stop by to see their new garden and tour the school.
