Celebrating the new play space at St. James
Together with over 100 students, parents and friends, administrators and church leadership welcomed everyone to a ribbon cutting and blessing ceremony at the school's new playground.
The Montessori school and Mother's Day Out program, which serves children ages 18 months through 4th grade, is located in the St. James Episcopal Church.
It's the tradition of the Montessori approach that led St. James Headmistress, Loree Birkenback, and her parent volunteers to research the advantages of natural playgrounds.
"When I found the company that designs these playgrounds, it seemed like a nice concept," said Birkenback.
"Allowing for more natural exploration, it just made sense."
"We knew we needed to replace some equipment, and we wanted the new playground to fit with the Montessori philosophy."
According to Ginger Greenberg, school parent and volunteer, research shows that natural playgrounds entice and hold children’s attention as they learn about nature and improve their motor skills.
"The benefit of outdoor play is greatly enhanced by the beauty and safety of a natural playground, as well," said Greenberg.
The two-year fundraising effort was the combined initiative of the school, the vestry, and the St. James parishioners.
Friday's ceremony was a wonderful celebration of everyone's hard work, as Reverend Brendan Kimbrough and Bishop James M. Stanton opened the ceremony in prayer.
Lower elementary students performed the opening song, which was followed by the official ribbon cutting.
Headmistress Birkenback offered special thanks to the volunteers, crew members and students who all helped make the project a reality.
In addition to being a beautiful play space, plans are also being discussed to use the new playground for sunrise services and holiday displays.
"We think it would be wonderful spot to host the Nativity scene at Christmas," said Birkenback.
"It would certainly be a nice compliment to our prayer garden."
