Summer VBS at LHUMC makes a difference
Fun times at LHUMC Vacation Bible School
Monday, June 15th marked the beginning of one of the community's most popular summer traditions - Vacation Bible School at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.

Over 200 children, ages 4 - 12, participated in the widely successful Camp EDGE last week at the church on Plano Road.

Lead by volunteer Erika Stilwell and staff member Debbie Davis, this year's celebration combined a lot of fun with a lot of purpose.

The VBS 2009 mission project for this summer was a canned food drive for Network Community Ministries, a local organization that distributes more than 10,000 pounds of food each week to those in need.

Network Community Ministries (NETWORK) is a non-profit organization that provides health and emergency services to children, low-income families, and senior citizens in need within RISD.

In addition to the canned food drive, 5th and 6th grade students also collected funds for Healing Hands Ministries, a LH clinic that provides charity medical and dental care to children and adults in the Lake Highlands community.

And if that weren't enough, they also collected gently used soccer balls to be delivered to an orphanage in Mexico during their Youth Mission Trip to Matamoros.

So in between exciting activities, arts and crafts, lots of singing and silly themes like Crazy Hair Day, these VBS kids made a big difference by supporting a number of great causes.

Director of Children's Ministries, Debbie Davis, couldn't have been more pleased to watch the donations pile up. "Our goal is to reach the mountain top," she exclaimed, referring to a decorated backdrop in the church gymnasium.

By week's end, piles and piles of donated cans did just that, and everyone associated with this year's event proclaimed another LHUMC VBS a wonderful success - for so many reasons.
